James Fisher DeBerry

  • 1956 Graduate of Cheraw High School
  • 1960 Graduate of Wofford College
  • Was a three sport athlete at Cheraw
  • Named All State in Football as a Senior
  • Played baseball and football at Wofford
  • In 1962, he began coaching at Bennettsville High School in football
  • In 1963-66, he coached at McClenaghan High School in Florence as Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Football Coach
  • Coached Legion Post 1 Baseball in Florence
  • In 1967 he was the Head Baseball Coach at Wofford and Assistant Football Coach under Jim Brakefield
  • After coaching at Wofford, he became the Offensive Coordinator at Appalachian State
  • In 1980, he served as the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback Coach for the Air Force Academy
  • In 1983, he was named the Head Coach of the Air Force Academy
  • He served 23 years as the Head Coach with a record of 169 wins and 107 loses where he had the most wins of any Head Coach in Military Academy history
  • His 1985 team went 12 – 1 with a victory in the Cotton Bowl vs Texas
  • He received the Coaches Award, Writers Award and the Bobby Dodd Award in 1985
  • He received the State Farm Coach of Distinction Award in 2001
  • He served as the President of the American Football Coaches Association
  • He received an Honorary Doctors Degree from Wofford College
  • Is a member of the South Carolina Sports Hall of Fame since 2003
  • In addition, he is a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization
