Larry “Scooter” Earl Jewell

  • 1953 Graduate of McClenaghan High School
  • 1957 Graduate of the University of South Carolina with a B. A. Degree in Arts & Sciences/English Major
  • In High school he played baseball three years on Varsity
  • He was elected Team Captain as a Senior at McClenaghan
  • In 1955, he played with the Florence Gales in Semi-Pro Baseball
  • At USC he walked on for baseball and earned a scholarship as a sophomore and became a starter at second base
  • He lettered three years at USC in baseball
  • Was known for his outstanding defense where he made only 8 errors in 279 chances for a fielding average of .972 and held a career batting average of .301
  • Was elected team captain and MVP as a Senior at USC
  • Received his greatest honor by being named All ACC as a Junior and Senior at USC
  • He was chosen in MLB draft and was sent to the Florida-Alabama League
  • His career ended when he was drafted into the military
  • He serves on the Lexington County Gamecock Club Board of Directors since 1993
  • Member of the USC Association of Lettermen
  • Member of the USC Hall of Fame Selection Committee
