Career
Played on the 1950 and 1951 Florence American Legion baseball teams
Due to age restrictions, in 1952 served as assistant coach of the Florence
American Legion team under head coach Kirby Jordan
Awarded a football and baseball scholarship to Newberry College in 1952
Served on Florence County Recreation Commission from 1964 to 1970, and coached
Palmetto Boys baseball teams (ages 13‐14) to the State
Championship in 1965 and State Runner‐Up in 1966
Served on the American Legion Athletic Committee off and on for a total of 15
years, including the last 5 years
Founder and Chairman of the Florence District One Male and Female Athlete of the
Year Awards and Banquet
The “You Gotta Have Heart” Athletic Award was established in his honor
in 2010 by Florence District One Superintendent Larry Jackson, and is
given annually to the District One Athlete of the Year finalist that best
exhibits persistence, courage, honesty, integrity and work
ethic as well as supports their team and their school
Active member of the Francis Marion University Booster Club, Patriot
Brigade/Swamp Fox Club for over 35 years, and was the 2005 recipient
of FMU Athletics Department Florence Community Member Most Valuable Partner
Award
Served on the inaugural Board of Directors for the Florence Athletic Hall of Fame
and served three terms on the Board (2005‐2006,
2007‐2009, and 2010‐2012)
Military Service
Served in the U.S. Army from 1956‐158, the Active
Reserves from 1958‐1960, and the Standby Reserves from
1960‐1962
