In 1983, he was named the Head Coach of the Air Force Academy
He served 23 years as the Head Coach with a record of 169 wins and 107 loses where he had the most wins of any Head Coach in Military Academy history
His 1985 team went 12 ‐ 1 with a victory in the Cotton Bowl vs Texas
He received the Coaches Award, Writers Award and the Bobby Dodd Award in 1985
He received the State Farm Coach of Distinction Award in 2001
He served as the President of the American Football Coaches Association
He received an Honorary Doctors Degree from Wofford College
Member of the South Carolina Sports Hall of Fame since 2003
