Coach Dewey Grant Bennett
Coach Bennett came to Florence in 1951 as the golf professional at the Florence
Country Club. Shortly after arriving in Florence he began a junior golf program and he volunteered to coach
the golf & football teams at McClenaghan High School. He left Florence in 1964 and returned in 1966 to
develop the Country Club of South Carolina and he also worked with the Francis Marion golf team. While in
Florence his accomplishments included:
- Nationally recognized junior golf program
- 10 South Carolina High School State Championships between 1956 & 1969
- 7 Southern High School Team Championships between 1957 & 1964
- 7 Southern High School Individual Championships between 1957 & 1964
- Golf teams won over 200 high school golf matches and only lost once between 1957 & 1969

- 1952 ‐ Started the Florence Junior Boys Invitational that is still being played today
- 1955 ‐ Asst. Football Coach with McClenaghan State Champion football team
- 1955 ‐ Hosted USGA Junior Girls Championship at FCC
- 1956 ‐ Carolina's PGA Pro of the Year
- 1959 ‐ Pop Warner Service to Youth Award
- 1960 ‐ 1990 ‐ Member, USGA Junior Championship Committee
- 1963 ‐ Hosted USGA Junior Boys Championship at FCC
- 1978 ‐ elected to South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame
- 1980 ‐ elected to South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame
- 1988 ‐ elected to Carolina's Golf Hall of Fame
- 1990 ‐ elected to Carolina Sportswriter Hall of Fame
- Served on the staff of Golf Legend Ben Hogan
